June 13th (12pm - 4pm)
Have you seen those spoon carving videos with that satisfying crunch, where the wood is wet and it looks like they are carving butter instead of wood? That’s because they’re using green wood… and also very sharp tools.
In this class, we’ll explore spoon carving using “green wood,” or freshly cut wood that still contains moisture. You’ll work with a small set of essential hand tools: an axe, a saw, and a selection of carving knives. Starting with the axe, you’ll rough out the basic shape of your spoon, then gradually refine it with controlled, precise knife work.
As you carve, you’ll discover that the wood becomes your collaborator. While you guide the overall form, you’ll also learn to read the grain and respond to it, letting it influence the direction and character of your cuts.
And if the weather’s nice, we’ll take things outside, maybe even carve around a fire!
